Fuelling a better future with hydrogen

We’re helping drive future mobility by developing innovations in hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Quick to refuel

Refuelling a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle can take as little as five minutes (there is only one Toyota owned hydrogen refuellerG4 in Altona, Victoria.).

Water vapour emissions

The only tailpipe emissions produced by a hydrogen fuel cell is water vapour.

Efficient

Using hybrid electric regenerative technology, electricity can be harnessed when braking.

How it works

How Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles work

A fuel cell uses the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity without harmful tailpipe emissions.

Oxygen

For hydrogen to be turned into energy it needs oxygen to complete the reaction. The Mirai has a large front grille that takes in oxygen from the atmosphere.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is stored in the Mirai’s safe, durable and purpose-built tanks before being released into the fuel cell system.

Combined

In the fuel cell system, hydrogen and oxygen from the air combine in a chemical reaction that creates electricity to power the electric motor.

Equals energy and water

After the chemical reaction creates electricity, the only tailpipe emissions are water vapour and oxygen.

Myth #1

“Hydrogen cars are dangerous.”

The Mirai’s chassis is designed to protect components in a collision and help prevent any hydrogen leaks occurring. It’s also equipped with safety sensors to detect any potential leaks in an instance where they may occur.

Myth #2

“Hydrogen cars have low range.”

Hydrogen is lightweight with a high energy density, which means the range of hydrogen vehicles can be comparable to those that use carbon-based fuels like petrol. The Hydrogen Electric Toyota Mirai has a range of 650kmG11.

Meet the Mirai

The Mirai Hydrogen FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) delivers on its promises of efficient mobility. The Toyota Mirai is currently only available in limited numbers for business fleet to leaseG4.

Refuelling a Hydrogen Electric Vehicle

There is currently one Toyota-owned refuelling station in Altona, Victoria. We’re dedicated to a future with improved mobility for all.

Our commitment

We're working towards reducing vehicle CO2 tailpipe emissions through the development of alternative powertrains

Disclaimers

G4-Vehicle only available for limited fleet customers. Toyota owned hydrogen refueller available in Altona, Victoria.G11 - Results were achieved under test conditions and do not reflect the driving range in real world driving.650km range, achieved for the Australian Mirai, is based on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). Australian model has not been tested using WLTP test procedure but would be expected to have similar results under WLTP test conditions. The electric range and the energy consumption values were determined using a fully charged battery in a laboratory test are not reflective of real world driving. Actual driving range may vary depending on accessories fitted, battery age and condition, climate, driving style, use of heating/cooling, traffic conditions, and vehicle load. The WLTP test cycle has higher energy demand compared to the NEDC which will generally deliver a lower driving range. For more information, please visit toyota.com.au/explore/electrified/faqs
